Where to Get Canvas Prints: What to Check Before You Order

Canvas Prints Austin, TX

You can get canvas prints from three kinds of places: large online photo services, photo centers in big stores, and local canvas workshops. The place matters less than 9 checks: who looks at your photo, the frame, the sizes, the total price with delivery, the delivery date and how fast someone answers. In Austin, a local workshop can deliver the next day, free.

Searching for a canvas print brings hundreds of options, and from the outside they look the same: a photo of a canvas on a wall, a price, an upload button. The difference shows up later, when the canvas arrives: a face that is too soft, a crop that cut off a person, a frame that bends, a delivery that comes a week after the birthday.

This guide is a checklist for choosing where to order. It is written by Austin Canvas Prints, a small canvas workshop in Austin, so we explain how we do things, but the questions work for any place you consider. Ask them before you upload your photo, and the result will be much easier to predict.

What kinds of places make canvas prints?

Canvas prints are made by large online photo services that print and ship across the country, by photo centers inside big retail stores, and by local print shops and canvas workshops. Each type has its strengths, and the right one depends on how fast you need the canvas and how much attention your photo needs.

Type of place Usually good at What to watch
Large online photo service Many products, frequent discount codes, shipping anywhere Shipping time and cost, automatic processing of photos, a crop you do not see until delivery
Photo center in a big store A familiar place, sometimes local collection Limited sizes, production often outside the store, few options for collages or text
Local print shop Personal contact, help with files Many shops focus on paper, banners and business printing, canvas may be a side product
Local canvas workshop Canvas is the main product, a person checks each photo, fast local delivery Delivery area, the range of sizes and formats

None of these is right or wrong for everyone. A person ordering ten canvases for an office in another state has different needs from someone who needs one portrait for a birthday tomorrow. The checklist below helps to compare any of them.

1. Does a person check your photo before printing?

The most important question is whether a person looks at your photo before it is printed. A photo that looks great on a smartphone screen can look soft or dark on a canvas that is twenty times bigger. Automatic systems print whatever is uploaded; a person can notice a problem and fix it or tell you before the canvas is made.

At Austin Canvas Prints every photo is checked before printing, and we enhance it if needed: brightness, color and sharpness, within what the file allows. If a photo is too small for the size you chose, we would rather tell you than print a disappointing canvas.

2. What frame is the canvas stretched on?

A canvas print is a printed canvas stretched over a wooden frame called stretcher bars. Ask how the canvas is stretched and how deep the bars are. A canvas that is stretched by hand and tight on the frame stays flat on the wall for years; a loose canvas can sag in a humid room.

Our canvases are stretched by hand on 0.75 inch stretcher bars. Thin bars keep the canvas close to the wall, which looks clean in a modern room and works well for split sets that hang side by side.

3. Does it come ready to hang?

A good canvas arrives ready to hang, with a hanging kit included. Some services sell the hanging hardware separately or ship the canvas without it, and then the gift stays leaning against the wall for weeks. Check this before you order, especially for a gift.

Every canvas from our workshop comes with a hanging kit, so the person who receives it can hang it on the same day.

4. Which sizes and formats are available?

Check that the place offers the size your wall needs and the format you have in mind. Some services offer only a few sizes; others have dozens, which can make the choice harder. Look for sizes that match the shape of your photo, so it prints without heavy cropping.

We print eleven standard sizes from 8×12 to 20×30 inches, and sizes in between, for example 14×14, on request up to 20×30. Besides a single canvas photo print, we make collages, canvases with text, pet portraits and split sets of 2 to 5 panels for wide walls.

Format Price from (smallest size)
Canvas photo print $65 (8×12)
Canvas photo collage or canvas with text $85 (8×12)
Pet portrait in a chosen style $95 (8×12)
Same day canvas print $115 (8×12)
Split canvas set $107 (2 panels)

5. What is the total price with delivery?

Compare the total price, not the price on the first page. A canvas that looks cheap can become expensive after shipping, a fee for express production and tax. A discount code that takes 50% off a high regular price may end up close to another place’s normal price.

Before comparing, add the same canvas to the cart in each place, with the same size and the same delivery address, and look at the final number at checkout. With us, delivery in Austin and 83 nearby ZIP codes is free, so the price on the product page plus tax is what you pay. For the rest of the US, Economy shipping is free and Express costs $24.95.

6. When will it really arrive?

Ask for the delivery date, not only the production time. Many services quote how long it takes to make the canvas, and the shipping time comes on top. For a gift with a fixed date, the only number that matters is the day the canvas reaches the door.

A local workshop has a clear advantage here. In Austin we deliver ourselves: regular orders placed by 3 PM arrive the next day, and same day canvas prints ordered by 1 PM arrive by 8 PM, seven days a week. Our guide same day or next-day canvas explains when each option makes sense.

7. Can you control the crop?

Ask how the crop is decided. When the shape of your photo and the shape of the canvas differ, part of the picture is trimmed. On a landscape this is rarely a problem, but on a group photo it can cut off the person at the edge. Good places either show you the crop or let you tell them what must stay in the picture.

When you order from us, write in the order notes what must stay in the photo, for example “keep grandma on the left fully in the picture”. We follow these notes when we prepare the file.

8. How fast do they answer questions?

Send a short question before you order and see how long the answer takes. If a place takes three days to reply before you pay, it will not be faster after. For a gift with a date, a quick and clear answer is worth a lot.

Our support email is support@austincanvasprints.com. We reply within an hour or two during business hours, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time, seven days a week; messages sent later get an answer the next day.

9. Can you see real examples?

Look at real examples of the formats you want, not only stock pictures of living rooms. Product pages with several photos, examples of collages and text layouts, and pet portraits in different styles show what the final canvas can look like. Google reviews help too, especially ones that mention the delivery and the quality of the print.

On our site, every product page shows examples of the format: single photos, canvas collages, canvases with words and pet portraits. If you want to see how a certain layout could look with your photos, email us before ordering.

What are the warning signs of a poor canvas offer?

A few signs suggest that a canvas offer may disappoint: a price that is only low with a code that expires in minutes, no information about the frame, a hanging kit sold separately, no delivery date before payment, and no way to tell anyone how to crop your photo. One sign alone is not a reason to walk away, but several together usually are.

  • A permanent countdown timer. If the “sale ends today” message comes back every day, the regular price is not the real price.
  • No word about the stretcher bars. A serious canvas maker is happy to tell you what the canvas is stretched on.
  • Extras at checkout. Hanging hardware, “premium” photo checks or protective coating added as paid options after you chose the canvas.
  • Only a production time. “Made in 3 days” says nothing about when the canvas reaches your door.
  • No contact before ordering. If there is no email or form that gets a real answer, there will be no one to help if something goes wrong.
  • Only stock pictures. Real photos of real orders show the actual print quality much better than a staged living room.

A good offer is usually boring in the best way: a clear price, a clear delivery date, a frame described in one line, a hanging kit included and a person who answers your email.

How do you compare places quickly?

The fastest way to compare places is to ask the same nine questions to each one and write the answers in a simple table. It takes ten minutes and saves a lot of disappointment. Here is a summary you can copy:

  • Is the photo checked by a person before printing?
  • How deep are the stretcher bars, and is the canvas stretched by hand?
  • Is a hanging kit included?
  • Is my size available, in the shape of my photo?
  • What is the total price with delivery and tax?
  • On what date will it reach my door?
  • Can I tell them what must stay in the crop?
  • How fast did they answer my question?
  • Can I see real examples of this format?

Give each answer a simple mark: a plus, a minus or a question mark. The place with the most pluses and no minus on the questions that matter most to you, usually the photo check and the delivery date, is the one to try first. For a large order, start with one canvas and order the rest once you have seen the result.

If you are in Austin or the suburbs and the canvas is for a date, start with the delivery question. A local workshop that delivers the next day for free often wins on both time and total price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to get canvas prints?

The best place is the one that checks your photo before printing, stretches the canvas tightly on a solid frame, includes a hanging kit and delivers on the date you need. Compare the total price with delivery, not the price on the first page.

Is it better to order canvas prints online or locally?

For a large order shipped to another state, an online service can be convenient. For a canvas you need soon in your own city, a local workshop is usually faster and easier to talk to. In Austin we deliver the next day for free, or the same day for orders placed by 1 PM.

How much should a canvas print cost?

Our canvas photo prints cost from $65 for 8×12 inches to $149 for 20×30 inches, with free delivery in the Austin area. Collages and canvases with text start at $85, pet portraits at $95.

How long does it take to get a canvas print?

It depends on the place and the distance. In Austin and the suburbs our regular orders arrive the next day if placed by 3 PM, and same day orders placed by 1 PM arrive by 8 PM. Shipping to the rest of the US takes 5 to 8 business days with Economy or 2 to 5 with Express.

What should I ask before ordering a canvas print?

Ask whether a person checks your photo, what frame the canvas is stretched on, whether a hanging kit is included, what the total price with delivery is, and on which date it will arrive.
